What is Green card?
A Green Card or Permanent Resident Card serves as proof of a person's lawful permanent resident status in the United States. An individual with a Green Card has the right to live and work permanently in the United States. A person’s valid Green Card also means that he or she is registered in the U.S. in accordance with United States immigration law. 
Benefits of getting green card

Different Ways to get Green card
There are 5 main ways an individual can obtain permanent residency or green card for United States:
·       Sponsorship by an employer -  Your employer / company can sponser you greencard. With in this there are few catogories like EB1, EB2, EB3, EB4, EB5. Most familiar ones are EB1, EB2, EB3. Masters Students / Phd degree holders in USA (F1 Visa)and H1B visa holders generally get greencard in this way.

·       Investment Entrepreneurs (and their spouses and unmarried children under 21) who make an investment in a commercial enterprise in the United States and who plan to create or preserve ten permanent full time jobs for qualified United States workers, are eligible to apply for a green card (permanent residence). Up to 10,000 visas may be authorized each fiscal year for eligible entrepreneurs. You must invest $1,000,000, or at least $500,000 in a targeted employment area (high unemployment or rural area).  In return, USCIS may grant conditional permanent residence to the individual.

·      Sponsorship by a close family member who lives in USA - Your relatives in USA who are citizens of US can sponsor you green card.
 

        Green card lottery - For Citizen from certain countries, United States Government issues 50,000 permanent Green Cards every year through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program(DV Lottery), the Green Card Lottery. Applicants are selected randomly by a computer generated drawing If you are selected, you and your family will be authorized to live and work permanently in the United States.

·      Asylum & refugee status - Asylum is a form of relief and protection available to foreign nationals who have been persecuted or have a well-found fear of future persecution on account of their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion, if they were to return to their home country or country of last habitual residence. Foreign nationals who are arriving or already in the U.S., regardless of their immigration status, can apply for asylum.
